Art WIP
This is the Work In Progress page for Andrew Tucker. I will be posting pictures of my drawings and paintings at various stages of their development until they reach completion. This is the main reason I initiated this blog. It will be much easier to post progress here than on my website http://www.andrewtuckerart.com . I will give a little background at the beginning of each WIP .

Sorry I have been away from this blog for a while. I have been keeping busy and maybe have been not as focussed as I need to be. I’m human. But here is a recently completed colored pencil piece I wrapped up about two weeks ago. It is a portrait of an old friend’s Stearman biplane. I was fortunate to have been asked to take a ride one evening in late August. I had the time of my life up there!

Here is the completed rework of the portrait.

I was not happy with how my first attempt at this portrait turned out, so I have decided to start over from the beginning.
Here is one evening’s work on the first layers of colored pencil. It is much more difficult to create a specific color and
value by layering color than it is to mix paint and add glazes. I hope this one progresses more to my liking.

7/6/2009 Here’s something a little different for me. A portrait of my eldest daughter in colored pencils. I’ve always
been intimidated by portraits and I hope that by facing my fear I can broaden my scope of subject matter
and improve my skills at the same time. This is also the first time I have used colored pencils for anything
other than touchups on paintings.

I have made some progress here. Several more glazes have been added to enhance the depth and richness of the green camoflage. I just added the USAF insignia to the fuselage. After looking at it with fresh eyes, I can see it needs some adjustments.

This one doesn’t look much different from my last picture posted, but believe me, a lot of work into this since then. I completely repainted the fuselage and spent a large portion of my time defining it’s form by adding many glazes. Glazing is proces of adding several washes of a very thinned down color which when applied to an existing color, causes it to change in appearance and color temperature. It also creates more depth in your colors.

Here is an update of the F-100D painting. I have been working to enhance the green camoflage paint on the main fuselage and I have begun work on the cockpit and canopy area. One thing I will change is to remove the visor from the pilot’s face and paint the pilot’s face and oxygen mask. In the low light I doubt the pilot would have his visor down.

F100Ds (currently untitled)
Acrylic on canvas. 20″x36″
This is a close-up of a painting that I am currently working on which portrays a pair of USAF F-100D Super Sabres from the 120th TFS, 35th TFW based at Phan Rang, RVN during the Vietnam War. The mission and setting are of my own imagination. I just really wanted to depict a real workhorse of that conflict in action. This picture shows where I am at the present time. Progress is slow due to the fact I can only paint for a few hours a night 3 or 4 nights a week. It will take several more weeks to complete this painting. Please hang with me and check back often for more updates.
